What to Do Before a Nor’easter Hits the South Shore

A homeowner checklist for preparing your property for heavy rain, high winds, coastal flooding, and potential power outages.

Nor’easters can bring a combination of heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, falling trees, and power outages to Massachusetts. For homeowners on the South Shore, preparing before a storm arrives can help reduce property damage and make it easier to respond if something goes wrong.

Whether you live near the coast or farther inland, here are some practical steps you can take before the next storm.

1. Inspect Your Roof

Before severe weather arrives, look for visible signs of roof damage such as:

  • Missing, loose, or damaged shingles

  • Damaged flashing

  • Loose gutters or downspouts

  • Tree branches hanging over the roof

  • Previous areas of leakage or staining

Avoid climbing onto your roof during poor weather. If you suspect damage, have the roof inspected safely.

2. Clear Gutters and Drainage Areas

Leaves and debris can prevent rainwater from draining properly. When gutters overflow, water may collect near the foundation or enter vulnerable areas of the home.

Make sure gutters, downspouts, exterior drains, and nearby storm drains are clear before heavy rainfall.

Whenever possible, direct downspouts away from the foundation.

3. Check Your Basement and Sump Pump

South Shore homes can experience basement water intrusion during periods of prolonged or heavy rain.

Before the storm:

  • Test your sump pump.

  • Check the discharge line for blockages.

  • Move valuable belongings away from the basement floor.

  • Look for existing cracks or signs of moisture.

  • Consider backup power for your sump pump if appropriate.

A power outage during heavy rainfall can become a serious problem if your sump pump depends entirely on electricity.

4. Secure Outdoor Items

High winds can turn unsecured outdoor objects into hazards.

Bring in or secure patio furniture, grills, trash barrels, decorations, umbrellas, tools, and other loose objects.

If you have large trees near your home, look for visibly damaged or hanging branches before the storm.

5. Prepare for Coastal Flooding

Homeowners in low-lying and coastal South Shore communities should pay particular attention to local coastal flood forecasts and emergency instructions.

Move vehicles and important belongings to higher ground when appropriate, and never enter floodwater or drive through flooded roads.

6. Know Where Your Utilities Are

Before an emergency, make sure household members know where the main water shutoff is located.

If a pipe breaks or another plumbing emergency occurs, shutting off the water quickly may help limit additional damage.

Never interact with electrical equipment while standing in water. If flooding reaches electrical systems, stay away and contact the appropriate professionals.

7. Document Your Property Before the Storm

Take photos or video of your home’s exterior and important interior areas before severe weather arrives.

Consider documenting:

  • Roof and siding

  • Windows and doors

  • Basement

  • Major appliances

  • Furniture

  • Electronics

  • Other valuable belongings

Keeping a basic record of your property’s pre-storm condition can be helpful if damage occurs.

8. Prepare for a Power Outage

Keep flashlights, batteries, portable chargers, medications, drinking water, and other essentials accessible.

Follow manufacturer instructions when using generators and never operate a generator inside a home, garage, basement, or other enclosed area.

After the Storm

Once conditions are safe, walk around your property and look for signs of damage.

Watch for roof damage, fallen branches, standing water, ceiling stains, basement flooding, broken windows, damaged siding, and other signs that water may have entered the structure.

Do not enter areas that appear structurally unsafe or contain potential electrical hazards.
